“Nah, it’s okay. I should help since you brought me out to the farm and all that.” Reese gave him a small smile.

“Good man.”

They got all the bags inside and the food put away, and then Reese went to shower and August cooked dinner. They ate together at the table, but afterward, being the typical teenager that he was, Reese disappeared into his room.

August frowned when a call came in from Lewis. “Hey, everything okay?”

“Yeah. I was just thinking about the welding, and I’m not sure that’s a good idea. Welding is dangerous.”

August was surprised for a moment before acknowledging that this was typical Lewis. “I trust Clint to make sure Reese is safe. He’s not going to hand him a mask and machine and leave him to it on his own. He’ll take it slow.”

“You sound like you know this guy well.”

“He’s an old friend from middle school.” A spike of anger flared up in him. “And you know what? You always do this. You talked to Reese about welding and made it sound like you thought it was great. Then you come to me afterward with concerns, so I’m the one who’s supposed to say something to him, so I’m always the one letting him down. You did this when we were married too.”

Lewis groaned. “I didn’t call to fight with you. I just thought since we’re both his fathers, we should discuss decisions like this.”

“He’ll be fine. We’ll make sure of it. Reese is excited, and I’m not taking this away from him.”

“It’s on record that I don’t support a fifteen-year-old welding.”

“Noted,” August replied. “I’m going to go. Thank you for calling him.” While he was pissed at Lewis, it was important to August that their issues never came between Reese and his other father.

“He’s my son. You don’t have to thank me, and of course I’d call him.”

August didn’t remind him that he had to ask him to do exactly that.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Clint

Clint was in bed that night when his phone vibrated on the nightstand. He rolled over, picked it up, and smiled.

August: Reese had a great day. He asked about coming over for a welding lesson. No rush, though.

I’m calling, Clint texted, giving August time to say if he shouldn’t.

When he answered, Clint asked, “What about you? Did you have a great day?”

“I swear I can still feel you,” August replied softly, that one sentence going straight to Clint’s dick. “Next time, I want to fuck you.”

“That can be arranged. I’m definitely game to give you my ass.” While Clint did consider himself vers, he had a lot less experience bottoming than he did topping. It wasn’t something he hadn’t wanted, just something the men he’d been with preferred.

“You’re gonna get me hard if you talk to me like that,” August admitted.

“Well, I already am, but that’s not what you texted me for. You guys wanna come over for dinner tomorrow night? I can show him then.”

August laughed. “Oh, I see how you are. Getting me going and then changing the subject.”

He liked talking with August this way, being able to joke and flirt with him. “I’ll make it worth it the next time we’re alone together. I just offered you my ass, remember?”

“Good point,” August replied, before sighing. “Yeah, dinner would be good, if you’re sure. You can always say no. I don’t ever want you to feel obligated to host us or, hell, hang out with me and my teenage son.”

Clint rolled his eyes even though he was alone, in the darkness of his room. “I like hanging out with you and your teenage son.” Maybe too much, if that was a thing. Of course, he liked hanging out with August by himself too.

“Just making sure.” August was quiet for a moment, and Clint could tell he had more on his mind. He let August sit with it, simmer some until he continued. “I don’t want to mess this up. Our friendship or whatever else we have going on.”

Those two simple sentences worked their way into Clint’s heart. He wondered if August felt like he’d messed up his marriage, if he thought it was his fault. He knew August felt guilt over the pain it had caused Reese, which was likely a big part of the reason he wanted to keep this thing between them a secret. “You’re not going to mess this up. It would be impossible.”

“I don’t know about that.”

“I do.” Because Clint had always been different when it came to August. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for August, which was a sobering thought.

“You haven’t heard me snore yet. It’s pretty bad,” August teased.

“That might be a deal breaker.”

“Damn it!” They laughed together before both going silent.

“You didn’t tell me about Reese’s day. I sidetracked you with sex talk.” He really was curious. Clint might not know Reese well, but he liked the kid.
