I lower my head to Melody’s in a slow, leisurely kiss.

I switch our positions and press her against the door instead, enjoying the way she immediately curves into my body.

I run my hands slowly down her back to her ass cheeks. I squeeze gently while running my tongue along hers in leisurely licks. The sounds of her moans disappear into my mouth and vibrate deliciously against my chest, fanning the flames of desire she’s started in me.

I reluctantly pull away from her, reminding myself that I need to talk to her and clear any misunderstanding she might have about June and me.

I stare into her luminous blue eyes, drowning in their gorgeous depths. My head feels light, and my chest seems like it’ll burst at any second. I should be used to this drugging effect associated with kissing her, but every time feels like a first.

“Why did you leave like that?” I ask gently. “You had me worried sick.”

Melody shrugs. “It’s just...I just kinda felt overwhelmed. I thought I should be home. Hudson is home. I’m sorry that I left without a word.”

I let out a deep sigh.

“I know you heard the discussion between June and me,” I say. “And I know about the panic attack. I’m so sorry, Melody. June shouldn’t have….”

“You don’t need to apologize on her behalf,” Melody interrupts with a genuine, albeit tired smile. “She’s only worried for you. I’m sure everything she said was from a place of love.”

“But still...,” I say, my stomach churning with guilt. “I’m sorry. She didn’t have the right to say those things about you. And about the kiss, I….”

“You pulled back, right?” Melody asks, eyes narrowing suspiciously.

“Of course!” I reply quickly. “I did immediately.”

“Then, that’s good enough for me,” Melody says with a satisfied nod. She sighs softly, her expression turning serious all of a sudden. “Abram. I...I know we haven’t talked about our difference in location, and I just always thought it would miraculously solve itself somehow. But after yesterday’s incident, I gave it a thought, and I realized that I don’t think I can live anywhere except for Hudson.”

“Mel....”

“Please, let me finish what I have to say,” Melody says, gently cutting me off. “I know it’s selfish of me to say this when you’re the one with a big career in London and all over the world, but this is my home. It’s the first place I found love and acceptance. I...I understand you also can’t move down here all because of me and me....”

“Of course, I can,” I say to her with a cheeky smile.

Melody gasps softly, her eyes opening wide in surprise.

“What? Why?”

I shrug.

“It’s about time I retired, anyway. But first, I have to go back and put some things in place. Will you wait for me?”

Melody nods, her lips pulling up in a happy smile that makes my heart pulse with a giddy feeling. I guess I’m in way deeper than I thought.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Melody

“Hasn’t it been a month since he left?”

I raise my eyes to Brenda, and my heart shrinks at the expression in her eyes.

Is that pity I see?

I sigh heavily and lower my gaze.

To think he asked me to wait for him while gazing at me with those angelic eyes of his, and I agreed with a big smile on my face, like a fool. Who knew he’d drop off the face of the earth like a damn hermit for a whole month?

“Yes, it has,” I reply with a deep sigh.

“And he still hasn’t contacted you?” Brenda asks with an angry scoff. “Who does he think he is to...? Never mind. I invited you out to dinner to cheer you up. I can’t believe I’m sitting here talking about him. He’s just so frustrating that sometimes I think I’m the more sensible sibling.”

I allow a small amused smile despite the gloomy sadness in my heart.

“Of course, you are,” I reply dryly.

Brenda studies my face for a minute and lets out a dramatic sigh.

“Okay! No more talk about Abram. Anyone who mentions him first will have to finish this wine bottle,” she says, pointing to the half-empty bottle of wine on our table. “This, and some more.”

“Okay,” I agree with a nod. “So, how are things with Daniel?”

Brenda sits back with a soft sigh.

“I’m falling deeper in love with him every day. Ella adores him, and he loves her right back. He’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of and more. I must say...it’s scary how a huge part of my happiness now depends on him. What if he turns out like my ex-husband?

“Mathew made my life a living hell, making me question my sense of judgment. I thought he was the world’s best guy, too. But he turned out to be a womanizer and a general scumbag. I’m scared, honey, but incredibly happy.”

“Daniel is a good man, Brenda,” I tell her with a reassuring smile. “And he will never treat you like Mathew did. I don’t know how I know that, but I do. It’s time you let this shadow of Mathew that’s hanging over you go. He doesn’t have power over you anymore. Dan and Mathew are two different men. You shouldn’t compare them anymore, or you may end up sabotaging what you have with Dan.”
