She didn’t have to say Mateo’s name for me to know who she was talking about. I bit my bottom lip sheepishly. “I feel bad about last night. And I want to give him a proper apology.”

She snorted and rolled her eyes. “Charlotte, we got off lucky by him not pressing charges—or worse, killing the guys and taking us females back to his cabin to have his wicked way with us.”

I rolled my eyes. “Really, Ashley?” I asked sarcastically.

“Although, if I’m being honest,” she said softly and looked over her shoulder at Jax, who still sat in the driver side seat and turned up the volume on the radio, “Mateo Braxton is fucking hot, Charlotte.”

I felt my cheeks heat. She was right, but it wasn’t just about how attractive he was, how big and strong, tall and muscular he was. I felt something last night when I looked at him… when he stared at me. His expression had been primal, instinctual. It was a strange feeling and scared me as much as it excited me.

The truth was, I did want to apologize, to thank him for letting us off the hook. He didn’t have to do that, but he had. But another part of me, a sexual part, wanted to just see him.

“Listen, I’ll be fine and it’ll take five minutes. I just don’t want the reputation of being an asshole who trespasses on other people’s property. We’re not immature like that.”

Ashley unfolded her arms and nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. You’re a much better woman than I am. Even though he’s super fine, he does scare the shit out of me.” She gave me a hug, and I smiled even though she couldn’t see me. “Call me when you’re back home, okay? I want to make sure he hasn’t kept you in his basement as a sex slave.

I chuckled, but I was uncomfortably concerned on why my heart raced and my body flushed at that thought.

I watched as Ashley climbed into the passenger seat. Jax gave me a peace sign before shutting the door, and then they were driving back down the mountain. I looked around, making sure everything was picked up, no trash inadvertently left behind. I didn’t even know where Mateo lived, but I assumed if I took the road farther up, I’d have to run into it at some point, right?

Once in my car with the engine cranked, I started heading up the mountain. The farther I got away from the campsite, and presumably closer to his place, the more I felt this anxiousness fill me, this excitement. It was such a strange sensation given the fact that this was the first time I’d actually “met” Mateo Braxton. Although I’d seen him from a distance maybe once, possibly twice in my entire life, it wasn’t like last night. Last night was something entirely different all in itself.

The way he looked at me, the way he held my gaze with his… the way my body felt like it was burning alive in the best possible way, had excitement and curiosity filling me.

I may be a virgin, but that didn’t mean I didn’t know what pleasure was. I’d certainly touched myself plenty of times. But an orgasm I gave myself would no doubt be tame compared to what I’d share with Mateo. I could only imagine.

I bet he took control, was dominant in the best of ways. I’d be his willing vessel, stretched, feeling his no doubt massive… appendage filling me up.

Oh. God. I was getting aroused just thinking about all this, and I shifted on my seat.

I thought about his expression when he’d stared at me, when I swore he tracked my movements with his gaze. I shivered at the remembrance of how I felt.

It was only five minutes of me ascending the mountain before I finally saw his cabin. It had to be his. I didn’t know of any other Thickwood resident who lived this far out.

His cabin was sat in the middle of a clearing, two-stories high, trees surrounding all angles. I slowed until I stopped in front of the driveway to my right; the path covered with pebbles wound up and curved to stop right in front of a two-car garage. I didn’t know what I’d assumed when I thought of Mateo’s cabin, but I guess I had envisioned some shack that was out of a horror movie. Instead, it screamed luxury but still had a rustic feel to it.

My heart was beating a mile a minute, and I curled my hands tightly around the steering wheel, breathing out slowly before sucking in a great lungful of air. I was nervous, so nervous I was tempted to just go back down the mountain and say screw being polite. But that wasn’t me. And besides, I wanted to see him again.
