Fox turned to look at me with a smile on his face. “Do you want to shower together? I might be lonely all by myself.”
I did. My cock stirred at the thought of Fox wet and slick, pressed up against the wall of the shower, my tongue in his ass again forcing him to make those desperate sounds. “No. I’ll wait my turn.”
“At least I know you can wait for something.”
“I can wait as long as I need to. I always get what I want. It doesn’t matter how long it takes me. Sometimes the best way to get things is simply to wait for them.”
“You really are a piece of work.” He headed to the bathroom but stopped at the window, frowning as he looked into the courtyard below. “What the fuck?”
When he took a step back, hiding himself behind the curtain, I knew something was wrong. He didn’t care that he was naked. He was proud of his body, and he damn well should be. I doubted he cared who saw it. He didn’t want to be seen for some other reason.
I wanted to believe he’d just seen something unusual like an alligator in the pool, but my gut told me it was something far more serious, something that was going to fuck everything up. “What’s wrong?”
“There’s a man down there I recognize. He shouldn’t even be in this country.”
I slid off Fox’s side of the bed and moved to the window, standing behind him. “Are you sure? Maybe he just looks like someone you know.” But even as I said it, I was sure that wasn’t the case. Someone had been on our balcony the night before, and they were still after us now.
“No. It’s him. That guy in all black sitting at the table.”
Oh, shit. I studied the man. From this distance, I couldn’t be sure, but he resembled one of the men in the file from Xavier. “Where do you know him from?”
“From my days in the marines. His name is Abdul. He shouldn’t be here. He’s part of an insurgent group in Afghanistan.”
My stomach flip-flopped as nausea tightened my throat. I knew the time had come. It was no longer safe for Fox not to know the real reason he was with me. “We need to go.”
“Because I recognize a guy? I want to figure out why he’s here.”
“He’s after you, and we need to go. Now.”
Fox grabbed my arm, stopping my progress toward my clothes. “What do you mean?”
“Fox, Xavier wasn’t exactly straight with you about this mission, but we don’t have time to argue right now. If that man is here, then he knows you’re here too. We’ve got to get out.”
For a second, I saw the shock and vulnerability in Fox’s eyes. He’d been tricked, and it didn’t just make him angry; it hurt him, maybe scared him. This deception was going to rock his confidence, and that was the last thing I needed. I jerked my arm free from his grasp. “Quit being an idiot and follow me.”
“You’re going to explain everything, and so is X. Then, I’m going to disappear and take the vacation I should’ve been on to begin with.”
“Don’t be a fucking idiot. You’re going to stay with me until you’re safe.”
“If I go off the grid, I’ll be safe.”
“You won’t be safe until we end this. If this is one of the men Xavier wants me to protect you from, they’ve kept this vendetta for years. They’re not going to stop looking for you.”
“Fuck. I really didn’t think… Ahmed swore he’d get revenge, but I thought…” As he ran a hand over his hair, he looked truly devastated.
“Come on. Right now, we need to grab our things and get out of this hotel. Once we’re away from here, I’ll tell you what I know.”
“I should be the one who knows everything. I should be the one X told.”
“Maybe and maybe not, but you’re going to be the one who lives because I’m going to get you out of here.”
“I can get my own self out of here.”
I ignored that. “Survey the courtyard. See if you recognize anyone else or if you see someone who might be working with that man. We need a sense of how difficult it’s going to be for us to get out unseen.”
“I don’t have to take orders from you.”
“Fox, do it now.” He glared at me, but after a moment, he headed back to the window.
I’ve done plenty of bad things in my life. Things that had no purpose other than personal gain. I’d rarely worried about how my actions affected others, with the exception of my sister and a very few friends. I kept my emotions out of business, but as I watched Fox walk away, I wanted to apologize for deceiving him. I never apologized.
