“Forget about making me a drink,” she says. “I want a douchebag.” She elbows her way to the edge of the bar, right next to Lucy, completely invading the other woman’s personal space. Much to my surprise, she turns her head and smiles with full teeth at Lucy, the way a great white shark smiles at a sea lion. Oh shit. I’ve never seen her look more like a murderer than right now. “I’m on a blind date with that guy down there,” she says breezily. She points to Jonas.

Lucy cranes her neck and catches sight of my brother in all his magical glory—and, not unexpectedly, the woman’s eyes pop out of her head. “Oh my God, honey. You’re on a blind date with him? Jackpot.”

“Yeah. His name is Blane.” Kat rolls her eyes.

Lucy squints at Jonas and then looks at me. “He looks a lot like you, actually. Are you two related?”

I crane my neck and look at Jonas. “Hey, yeah, he does kinda look like me. Huh.” I shake my head. “Nope, never seen that guy before in my life.”

“Wow. He’s your doppelgänger.”

“You think?”

Kat leans in and whispers. “He’s so boring I wanna gouge my eyes out. He’s a professional baseball player and he keeps talking about Plato.” Kat makes a sound like she’s snoring.

I laugh.

“He’s a professional baseball player?” Lucy steals another look. “Honey, if it were me, I’d let that man talk about anything he wanted to, whether it’s Plato or Play-Doh. Good lord, girl. You better get back over there. Don’t let some other woman swoop in and make a move on him.” She cranes her neck to look at Jonas again—a move I’ve seen women in bars perform more times than I can count. “Holy hot damn. Go.”

Kat sniffs and trains her eyes on me. Oh man, she’s absolutely on fire. “Eh. He’s okay, I guess. The problem is, while I was sitting over there with that guy, I kept getting distracted by another guy—a smoking hot bartender to be exact.” Kat leans over the bar, notably edging Lucy out of the pocket (and giving me a fabulous view of her pretty titties in her low-cut blouse). She lowers her voice to barely above a whisper. “This bartender I’ve been watching all night has so much swagger, I figure it can only mean one thing.”

I lean forward, my pulse pounding in my ears. “And what would that be?”

She licks her lips. “I figure it means he’s gotta have a really big dick.”

Lucy’s face turns bright red.

Oh my God, she’s ruthless. “What’s your name, sweetheart?” I ask, leaning into Kat even closer, my dick lurching in my pants.

“Kat.”

“Nice to meet you, Kat,” I say, putting out my hand. “I’m Josh.”

“Josh. Sexy name, Josh. That’s the name of a guy with a really big dick if I’ve ever heard one.” She wets her lower lip slowly like she’s licking barbeque sauce off a rack of ribs. “Please believe me, I’ve never done this before, and I know I’m on a date with Blane down there—and I know I’m probably coming off like a world-class slut—but I don’t give a crap. You’re so hot, I can’t stop myself.” She lowers her voice again. “If I leave here tonight without knowing if I’m right about what your swagger means, I’m gonna regret it for the rest of my life.”

Lucy physically jolts on her barstool like she’s been stuck with a cattle prod—and I’m right there with her, jerking like Kat just gripped my dick.

I lean into Kat’s ear, right next to poor Lucy, like we’re having a conversation about how Kat and I are gonna rob a bank, right in front of Lucy the Bank Teller. I feel vaguely guilty Lucy’s become an unwitting pawn in our little game, but it can’t be helped—having another woman as part of this conversation is turning me on too much to spare the odd-woman-out from discomfort. “Well, gosh, Kat,” I say. “What do you propose to do about your date? He seems like a nice enough guy—pretty damned good-looking, too. And a professional baseball player to boot. Maybe you ought to give him a chance.”

I crane my neck to look down the length of the bar at Jonas. He flashes me a look that can only be described as utter contempt for making him sit through this.

Kat glances down the bar at Jonas. “Oh, I’m not gonna ditch him. I’m going home with him and I’m gonna make him fall in love with me—he’s a professional ball player, after all. But that doesn’t mean I don’t wanna know if I’m right about your swagger—I won’t be able to sleep tonight if I don’t find out.” She straightens up and winks. “Bathroom in five, bartender.”

She leaves.

I look at Lucy. Her mouth is hanging open. Her eyes are wide.
