I betrayed the club.

Broke an unwritten law.

Lied to my president.

I’m fucked.

20

Delilah

Standing at the door of the club, I stare out the glass, watching Lip and Bobby stand on each side of Big Chief, who’s only in his briefs. They wouldn’t even let him put some pants on. My dad walks out from the side of the building pulling a large green garbage can behind him and dread fills my chest.

“Mom, stop him.” I look to her, standing beside me, and she wraps an arm around me.

“This is how it has to be, and you know that.”

The club president is law of the club. He’s the judge and the executioner. So if my dad thinks Big Chief fucked up, then he has to pay for it. I should be out there with him, I’m a part of this too.

Dad grabs beer bottles from the trash can that’s filled to the top from the party last night and smashed them onto the ground. One after another, he breaks them all.

“Delilah, get your ass out here!”

Mom opens the door for me and I step out, my arms crossed as if I can protect myself from what’s about to happen. The air is filled with the smell of sour beer, the clouds overcasting the sun and making everything seem ominous and gray.

“You’re acting like a crazy person!” I look right at my father. I knew he always held a grudge against me after Thane, and this proves it. He even admitted that he wasn’t going to let me hurt the family again. But did he ever think for a second what I went through when all that was going down after Thane?

Ignoring my outburst, he continues to thrash the bottles onto the ground. His punishment becoming clearer by the second. He’s going to make Big Chief walk across glass to get to me, literally.

After emptying the entire trash can, he kicks it away from him and looks to Big Chief with a cold stare.

“You said you’d do anything for my daughter, so do it. Prove to me that she means so much to you that your pain comes second to her.”

My eyes fill with tears as I look along the eight-foot path of broken beer bottles to where Big Chief stands. He should just walk away, I wouldn’t blame him. This is insane.

Big Chief

My eyes scan the shards of green, black, and brown broken glass. Some of it sparkling like candy crushed against the concrete, others poking into the air like sharp daggers. My toes curl into the ground and my heart beats in my chest as I think about chunks slicing the skin of my feet.

Glancing to Bobby, who’s the most reasonable one out of the club, he looks back at me with sympathy.

“Just high step, and don’t glide because it’ll slit your feet, man,” he advises, and I nod.

“Today!” Shadow roars, and I step up to the array of broken glass.

So, pick up my feet, that makes sense. I should go slow and stick to the middle where the bigger pieces are too. The sides look to have more shards and pieces that will slip right into the skin.

Rubbing my chin, I begin to sweat thinking about how to fucking perform this magic trick Shadow demands of me. Most fathers expect men to take their daughters out for dinner, show affection with flowers, and devote time to them. Delilah’s dad wants you to walk across broken glass. Holy shit!

Shadow loudly sighs, clearly annoyed and waiting for me to step up or step down.

I look at Delilah and the trip we had comes to mind. How she made a game out of drinking, and how cute she was when she was scared of the storm. Her laugh, that short temper of hers, and that fucking body, Christ. She makes me feel something I haven’t felt with anyone, then again she’s not like most girls. If I didn’t at least try to make it across this glass, I would always wonder what if. Like what if she was the one I let go?

Fuck it, I can do this… or at least fucking try. I was a bull rider, injuries and wounds heal. It’s mind over pain.

Raising my leg, I take a step onto the first section of broken glass. My heels instantly burn, the sting so intense I hiss through my teeth, jagged glass impales the front pads of my feet and I clench my eyes shut.

“FUCK!”

“Oh my god, please stop this!” Delilah’s voice breaks through my pain and I open my eyes, seeing her at the end of the broken shards. If I keep my eyes focused on her, I can get through the pain. Just imagine what it’ll be like when she’s all mine and we don’t have to hide anymore. I can take her on my bike, out to dinner, stay up late at night laughing and yelling at each other.
