Trevor swallowed hard, and Cord leaned down and whispered, “I know you’re mad, but don’t go there. Not here, not now.”

Melanie gasped. “Who? Who would make that sweet girl cry?”

Cord walked around me. “Do y’all mind if I steal my future bride? We’re supposed to call her dad in Ireland, and I don’t want it to get too late.”

Melanie looked at the clock. “Isn’t it late there already?”

Without saying a word, Cord ushered me out of the kitchen, but not before Trevor and I shared one more charged glance.

Trevor followed me and Cord out of the kitchen and through the house to the den. He spoke the moment we walked into the room and shut the door. “It wasn’t what it looked like.”

Spinning around, I pushed him on the chest as hard as I could. Trevor stumbled back, and Cord got between us.

“Maebh, don’t do this.”

Pointing around Cord, I glared at Trevor. “It was what it looked like, Trevor. You’re fecking around with her heart, and it’s not fair. She cares about you and all you care about is shagging anything that walks on two legs, only reaching out to her when you don’t have something better at night.”

“Maebh,” Cord pleaded with me.

Trevor’s eyes turned dark. “You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.”

Cord turned to his brother, his fist balled. “Don’t talk to her like that, Trevor.”

Trevor’s cold eyes jerked to his brother, and he pushed his hand over his head. “Maybe she should mind her own business then.”

Anger raced through me veins, and I pushed Cord out of the way, getting right into Trevor’s space.

“It’s me business when she sits in me office and cries herself to sleep because you keep breaking her heart, you arse! You’re an eejit for not seeing what is right in front of your damn eyes. You’re going to lose her, Trevor. That is, if you haven’t already.”

Trevor’s eyes filled with regret, and for a moment I swore they filled with tears.

“She was crying?” he asked, his voice the weakest I’d ever heard.

I folded me arms over me chest. “You have no idea what it does to her to see you go off with other women. Make a fecking decision, Trevor, before you destroy her.”

“I can’t let her go.”

Cord pushed his fingers though his hair. “Damn it, Trevor. What do you mean you can’t let her go?”

Trevor started pacing. “I told myself the first time we slept together it was only that one time. Then we ran into each other a week later, and we ended up back at her place and we slept together…again. Then she ended up getting sick and she called me over to her house. We didn’t sleep together that night, but I fucking stayed and took care of her, holding her in my arms and I liked it. I liked it too much. Something about that night changed everything. Holding her like that. It messed with my head.”

Cord sighed. “And that’s a bad thing, Trevor, to feel something for a woman?”

“Yes! It is. I’m not the type of guy who wants to be tied down to one woman. I’m not. I like sex. I like women. Fuck, I’m only twenty-five and just starting my life. I’m not looking for a relationship.”

“Then why do you keep going back to her?” Cord asked.

“I don’t know. She’s got some weird hold over me.”

His hand sliced over his buzzed head again, and the pained expression on his face almost made me feel sorry for him. “She’s constantly on my mind and the only way I can get her out is if I’m with other women.”

“That’s fucking stupid, man,” Cord snapped. “That’s called having feelings for someone. Wanting to be with that person.”

Trevor shrugged. “I can’t.”

“You can’t…or you won’t?” I asked.

His gaze dropped to the floor. The look on Cord’s face told me he was about to drop the news on Trevor. Stepping up to him, I placed my hand on his chest and shook me head.

With me voice low, I said, “It’s not yours to tell.”

Lacing his fingers with mine, Cord pulled me to the door but stopped before opening it.

“Do you know how mom has always said that true love only comes once in a lifetime?”

Trevor’s eyes met Cord’s.

“You’ve got it right in front of your fucking face, but you’re too goddamn scared to see it. I feel sorry for you, Trevor. You don’t even know what you have, dude. And if you aren’t careful, you’ll never get the chance to find out.”

Trevor let out a gruff laugh. “That’s where you’re wrong. I know exactly what I have, Cord. And I’m happy with my life.”

Me heart dropped and me chest ached for Scarlett and for Trevor. And for their unborn baby.

With a shake of his head, Cord let out an exasperated breath before he spoke again. “You keep telling yourself that, bro. Let me know how it works out for you.”
