“They chained you up,” I said sadly as I inspected the shackles.

“They are made of silver,” Viggo explained within my mind; it was still the only way to hear him over the roar of the excavator. “The metal weakens and contains me.”

“Well then, let’s get rid of these bitches.” I slowly eased the metal arm down once more, adjusting the lever until the fingers of the scoop slid beneath the chain links. I pulled back, and the machine slid through the restraints like they were made of butter. Silver links shattered and rained over the wooden box.

As soon as the chain was gone, a loud crack rang out when Viggo punched through the box. Wood splintered and broke apart before he sat up in his prison. My mouth went dry at the sight.

Viggo was gorgeous. He had been buried for over a hundred years, and I had no idea how old he was, but he only appeared to be in his mid-thirties. He had olive skin and dark, curly hair that rested on the top of his shoulders. A short, scruffy beard crossed his chiseled chin and jawline, and hazel eyes looked not only at me, but into me.

In a blink, Viggo leapt from the box. He appeared to float through the air before landing next to the excavator. Having him so close to me was overwhelming, but not in a good way - his beautiful eyes were now hungry, piercing into me like I was his prey. Fear consumed me when his upper lip curled, exposing two long fangs.

What have I done?

Chapter Two

Viggo

Desperate to be free of the prison that held me for so long, I leapt from the coffin. I landed only inches from my beloved one, and his beauty made me weak in the knees.

Skyler was tall and lean. His skin was creamy white and smooth, and the sapphire blue of his eyes matched the hair on his head. The ethereal color made me wonder if my mate was part fae, but his scent was undoubtedly human.

It didn’t take long for me to realize it was more than Skyler’s looks which had me feeling weak. Now that I was free from the curse that kept me alive without sustenance, my body’s needs were quickly becoming evident.

My strength was fading fast; I needed to drink blood to fuel my life force. Without it, I would soon perish. There was no one around except for my beautiful beloved, and I lacked the energy to seek out another human. I had no choice but to feed from Skyler.

He looked terrified as my fangs descended on instinct. My body was preparing to take what it needed to survive. I wanted to explain to Skyler what was happening; to tell him he had nothing to fear, but time was running out. I couldn't even pass a mental message to him, as my mind was racing and growing foggy at the same time. I only hoped he could understand and forgive me.

His eyes were wide and full of fear and confusion as I pulled him from the metal machine he sat in, but he didn't protest; even though he didn't understand what was happening, his body and spirit were still drawn to mine.

I cradled the back of his head in my palm and nuzzled my face into his neck, deeply inhaling his sweet scent. With no time to waste, I touched the tips of my fangs to his skin and bit down gently, sliding them inside.

When the first drop of Skyler’s blood hit my tongue, my body came alive. It was the sweetest blood I ever tasted, and every cell craved more. I swallowed large gulps, each one fueling me greater than ever before. I felt my strength not only returning, but multiplying.

My senses heightened, relishing the flavor on my taste buds, the scent in my nostrils, and the feel of Skyler’s trembling body beneath my fingers.

Damn. I quickly pulled my fangs from his supple skin, gasping when I saw that no blood dripped from the wound. I've taken too much. Skyler was even paler than before, and his eyes were closed as he lay limp in my arms.

I never meant to drink too much or harm him - my body was merely acting on instinct to quench my thirst. With my keen ears, I still heard the slow, steady thump of his heart. Skyler would be okay, but he needed rest to regain his strength.

I scooped my beloved one into my arms, holding him effortlessly. Now that his delicious blood had replenished me, I had strength and speed far greater than any human could dream of.

I cradled Skyler against my chest before turning my attention to the machine close to us. I didn't want to draw attention to its presence or my absence; I did not wish to alert my captor of my escape.
