“We all make mistakes, sweetheart. What matters is how we learn from them.”

“Uncle Claude is foul for this. He set me up,” she pouts.

“I set you up. Your uncle just gave me a warning and some info on how.”

“Why are you here? I mean, in Miami?”

“I’m spending the summers here. You and I will travel back and forth to New York over the next few months,” I reply.

“When you say I have to do as you say, what does that mean?” she says softly.

“It means you won’t steal anything I don’t tell you to. You will be where I tell you, when I tell you and you will stay out of anything I tell you to stay out of.”

“That’s it?”

“Yeah, what were you thinking?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never killed anyone or buried a body. So I’m just asking,” she murmurs.

I laugh and reach to brush her braids from her face. She turns to glance at me. I’m punched in the gut by her beauty as she does.

“Also, I’m still a virgin, so I’m putting my foot down when it comes to you trying to pass me around or something. That’s a no-fly zone.”

I don’t know why her words trigger something possessive in me. I’m nineteen. I shouldn’t be this fucking hard for her. I’m normally focused on business. Sure, I love a good lay, but I don’t allow women to distract me.

“You don’t have to worry about that. If anyone touches you, I’ll kill them. Your virtue will remain intact until you choose to have it otherwise. That’s not my style.”

The car falls silent as I program the GPS to have something to do with my thoughts and hands. My fingers are itching to rest on one of her shapely thighs. However, I won’t break my promise.

No one will touch her if she doesn’t want them to. I’m still deciding if I want her to want me to. I look her over—she’s in a simple hoodie with jeans and a pair of high-top Air Force Ones.

When I’d walked up on her as she tried to steal my car, I noted that she had a cute little ass on her. I can’t help wondering what’s hiding under that hoodie. She’d probably be smoking hot in a dress.

In fact, I know she would. I’ll be sure to find out at some point during this summer. I take a glance at the floor between my legs at her little backpack.

“Is that all you brought down with you?” I say, nodding at the backpack.

She glances in my direction quickly. Then she shrugs. “I didn’t have much time to think about what to take while rushing out of town to keep from getting my head blown off.”

“Fair enough. We’ll go shopping in the morning.”

“How? I don’t have any money.”

“I’ll take care of it. You’re not working for me for free, Oni. I will be sending money to your mother and taking care of you. Anything you need, let me know. I’ll handle it.”

“Forgive me if this all seems a bit unreal. Just a week ago, I was shitting bricks as I found your load in that truck. Now you’re being all nice to me and offering to take care of me and all my needs.

“Be honest, am I driving to my death? You have a cement truck waiting to cover me up, or some hogs ready to eat my body or something?”

I roar with laughter. She’s fucking adorable. One thing is for sure. I’ll be entertained this summer.

“He laughs. At least we’re not in the desert. I’d know for sure he’s planning to off me then,” she mutters under her breath.

“For the last time, I don’t plan to kill you. You’re my employee. Are you hungry?”

“God, I’m starving. I thought you’d never ask,” she breathes.

I chuckle and shake my head. We’ll have to work on her telling me what she needs. She should’ve told me she was hungry sooner.

“Make a U-turn up here. We’ll go get something to eat before we get to the house.”

She busts a U-turn before I finish speaking. I groan and throw my head back as the flashing lights and sirens come on behind us. I can feel her panic before she speaks.

“Fuck … fuck, fuck, fuck,” she says, freaking out.

“I need you to calm down and relax. I’ve got this,” I coach.

I wasn’t joking about having product in this car. I need her to play it cool and allow me to handle this. She looks at me with wide eyes.

“Dude, I don’t have a license. I’m Black and driving a more than two-hundred-thousand-dollar car. You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” she hisses.

“Just calm your ass down,” I bite out as she pulls over.

“Rico,” she drags out.

“Hush and follow my lead. I’ve got you. I’ve always got you, Oni.”
