I think of the other women who’ve been brought here. “Can I see my friends soon? Do they live close by?”

He gives a gentle tug on my hair. “The other pets who have been purchased live in this general vicinity, but you may not see any of them. Perhaps in the future, I’ll speak to other owners. We may decide to permit visits, but not soon. It wouldn’t be prudent. You are all adjusting to your new lives. The rules in each home are not the same. We won’t have you girls comparing your situations and grumbling. You’ll focus on me and me alone. Understood?”

“Yes, Sir.” I’m deflated, though. “Will everyone on the space station be kidnapped and sold as slaves?”

“I’m not fond of your wording, but I assume eventually, yes.”

Another consideration is that he hasn’t mentioned me working. I toiled long hours every day of my life on the space station. Since arriving on this planet, I have not lifted a finger.

“Will I be assigned a job?” I ask.

He tips me, so I’m cradled in his arms again, and looks me in the eyes. “Assigned a job? No, Little pet.”

“I’ve never been idle before,” I tell him. I’m not sure how I feel about it. Won’t I get bored?

“I’ll provide you with entertainment, Zoey. I’ve already been accumulating various toys for you.”

“Toys?” My voice rises. I have to stop myself from continuing at that volume. “Toys are for children. I’m an adult.”

He chuckles. “Adults can play with toys, too. Obviously, you wouldn’t be entertained by building a tower of blocks, but I bet you’d like to have an electronic device on which you could read or play games.” He lifts a brow.

That does sound heavenly. “How can I read? Does your planet have books written in English?”

“No, Little pet. But they don’t need to be. For one thing, I can download any or all the books you had on the space station. But also, as is the case in many things, our technology is far more advanced than what you’re used to. Any reading material we have from Venkoria or any other planet can be translated into your language in seconds.”

That’s certainly cool.

“The universe is at your fingertips, Zoey.” He lifts a section of my tangled hair. “How about I brush out these gorgeous locks and braid your hair so it’s not in your face. Then we can go outside.”

I squeal and clap my hands, unable to control my jubilance. I hope he doesn’t count my excitement as raising my voice.

He chuckles. “I guess that’s a yes?”

THIRTEEN

I’m entranced as Daddy fixes my hair. He sits me on the counter in the kitchen, so my head will be up high enough, and then he proceeds to brush out the thick waves.

Just like when he was petting me, this feels good. I’m not used to being pampered or even touched more than necessary. I’ve done my own hair for as long as I can remember. There was no time on the space station for frivolous styling. We pulled our long locks back either into a braid or a ponytail.

“Do all your females have long hair like this?” he asks as he sets the brush down and divides my hair into three sections.

“Most. It’s not a requirement or anything. We don’t often have the time to cut it.”

“It’s stunning, Little pet. Do you like it this long?”

I tip my head down. “It’s kind of heavy.”

“Would you be happier if it were a bit shorter?”

He’s done, and I twist around to look at him. “You would let me cut it?”

He shrugs. “I’m just being practical. It’s going to get in your way when you crawl.”

I wince. I hate the idea of crawling. Is he really going to force me to remain on the floor? The idea is so humiliating that I may silently rebel by not moving.

Daddy taps my nose. “You’re having naughty thoughts. I’ve discovered I can smell more than your arousal. Your body gives off a different scent when you’re conspiring.”

My eyes go wide, and I gasp. “That’s evil.”

He chuckles. “What were you plotting, naughty girl? Because I know you well enough to tell when your mind is jumping around while I’m talking. Beware. It would behoove you to focus on me and nothing else when I’m speaking to you. If I catch you not listening to me, it’s as bad as disobeying an order.”

I swallow. “Yes, Sir.”

“I’ll have someone come to the apartment to cut your hair for you. How does that sound?”

Giving him a slow smile, I nod. I’ve never had my hair cut by anyone who had a clue what they were doing. On the space station, we simply chopped off some whenever it became annoying. Some women kept their hair longer than others.

“That sounds nice. Thank you, Daddy.”
