“You had a good day today,” he guessed, setting a heavy sack on the table before kneeling by her side to kiss her.

She stiffened when he pulled back to look at her. She’d forgotten to brush her teeth. “Can you taste the chocolate milk I drank?” she lied.

His gaze narrowed further, making her feel like a pinned butterfly in front of a scientist. “No, but I can taste the coffee. Where did you get coffee?”

Crap! What could she say? Some truth was better than none. “Giana came over and brought a treat.”

“Oh, so I’ll find two cups in the trash?”

Crap, crap, crap! She hadn’t thought of that. Think fast, Brooklyn! “No… She took them with her, because… Because they recycle at her house. Giana is very dedicated to the environment.”

Her already panicked heart rate exploded when Caden reached into his back pocket and pulled out his phone. Seconds later, he said, “Koa. Do you recycle?”

Caden kept his gaze focused on her and acknowledged Koa’s response, “Thank you. I’ll explain tomorrow.”

“Want to try a different story?” he asked as he watched her squirm.

Her mind went blank. Caught, she couldn’t think of anything else to say but, “Sorry.”

“Tell me the truth.”

“Giana wanted to go for coffee. Koa won’t let her go alone because people flirt with her at the coffee shop.”

“Including himself,” Caden agreed. “Keep going. Giana wanted to get coffee.”

“She convinced me to go with her. I was scared to go, but Brent hasn’t been around for so long, and I wanted to have fun with Giana. Brent robbed me of so much.” She held her breath, hoping he would understand.

“He has,” Caden agreed. “Did anything concerning happen? Did you see Brent or his car?”

“No, nothing happened. We had a blast. It was incredible to live normally. Giana chose a small coffee shop close to here, so we’d be far from our old apartments where Brent saw me last.”

“Smart. Anything else you need to tell me?” Caden asked.

“No, that’s all. I borrowed the key by the garage door and locked the house. I tried to do everything the right way,” she said, hoping to convince him. Caden had seemed to understand her actions so far. Why did Brooklyn have a hunch she was still in trouble?

“You did everything right except for two things. You didn’t call me to tell me you were leaving and you lied to me.”

“Oh, I didn’t want to disturb you. What if you were busy?”

“We leave our phones in lockers, little girl, while we’re out on maneuvers and can’t be interrupted. You should leave a message if I don’t pick up.”

His steady gaze seemed to see into her soul. Her headache returned as her stress level rose. Lifting her hand to her forehead, Brooklyn caved.

“You’re right. I should have called. And…” she hesitated a second before admitting, “I’m sorry I lied about going out.”

“What do you think I would have done?” he asked quietly.

“Forbid me?”

“I’ll admit that would have been my first impulse. I hope I would have listened to your point about having already let Brent ruin so much for you.” Caden shook his head slowly as if he blamed himself.

“It’s not your fault that I lied,” she whispered as her stomach churned with worry. She rubbed her belly absentmindedly. She’d messed this up so badly.

“No. That was your decision. I think you know instinctively that lying is bad.”

“Yes, Daddy,” she whispered. “Are you going to spank me?”

“Yes. This makes two on your discipline list. But I won’t punish you until your concussion improves. When you can think clearly, we’ll write some rules for us both.”

Did she hear that right? “Daddies have rules too?”

“Definitely. We’ll discuss all our guidelines when your brain has healed. Now, I think you need some headache medicine.”

She nodded. “My head hurts. And it’s all my fault. When I get upset, the ache comes back.”

“It will take you some time to heal, little girl.” Caden rose and scooped Brooklyn into his arms. He walked over to the changing table and set her feet on the carpet. Carefully, he drew her T-shirt over her head and stripped off the rest of her clothing. When she was nude, he boosted her onto the changing table and strapped her into position on her side.

His hand rubbed over her bottom as he told her, “Zale sent home some new medicine for you. This is a liquid. It will help your tummy work better as well.”

“My tummy?” she echoed as Caden moved from her side to grab that bulging sack from the table.

He set it behind her, out of her sight. Caden opened the lubricant and prepared her bottom as normal, spreading the slippery mixture over her sensitive bottom hole and pressing two fingers inside to coat the walls of her tight channel. When he withdrew his touch, she slumped in relief on the table.
