Oh my. My stomach swirls with possibilities at his words. Until I remember I’m not single. I’ve been racking my brain for a way to make Chandler go away but so far, I’m stuck. Literally and figuratively. But that won’t stop me from getting to know the father of my baby.
His thumb brushes back and forth over the top of my hand, and I feel the tingle in places I shouldn’t be thinking about in public.
I meet Jack’s warm gaze. “Now relax,” he tells me. “And yes, I’ll be your tour guide.”
I breathe out a sigh of relief. “Good. Thank you.”
He treats me to one of his sexy smiles. “First date tonight?”
As the word date leaves his mouth, I stare in surprise. “Sure,” I hear myself answering, doing my best not to take the word date literally.
“I’ll text you more information later and you let me know where you’re staying. Good?” he asks.
“Very good,” I reply.
Looks like I’m going to get to know the father of my baby.
CHAPTER TEN
Jack
Taylor is pregnant. Sitting at the bar at my club, waiting for my partners to join me, I take a sip of whiskey and run my hand through my hair for the umpteenth time since I found out about the baby. The irony isn’t lost on me. One day I’m wishing I was in a relationship like my friends have and the next, I find out I’m going to be a father. There’s no in-between with me, apparently.
There’s going to be a baby I’m responsible for in seven months. And a woman I care deeply for in a very short time is now part of my life. It doesn’t matter if I’m ready to be a father, this is my reality. And the more I think about it, the more I anticipate the future that’s coming up soon.
Lucas and Tristan join me, each pulling up a barstool so we’re facing each other. It’s our planned meeting to go over any outstanding issues or new ones that have cropped up. What I’m not going to do is tell my partners about my situation, at least not yet. I haven’t had time to process the news myself. I’m not ready to share it with anyone.
“Okay, so where do we begin?” Tristan asks.
“Things are running smoothly at Midnight, except for the bartender who’s costing us a fortune,” Lucas informs us. “The new girl, Bella, she’s over-pouring, especially for her friends. I had a word with her and she promised to stop, but I’m keeping an eye on her.”
Tristan folds his arms across his chest. “The last thing we need is to lose money. We watch our budget closely. It’s what helps us keep in the black. Despite the club doing extremely well, we run a tight ship so that there’s nothing we miss that can hurt us later on.”
Nobody disagrees.
“Is that it for Midnight?” I ask. Considering we meet weekly, there’s not always a lot to go over.
Tristan nods and so does Lucas. “Okay, let’s move on to the Charleston location. Any updates?” he asks.
“No news on the permits or liquor license,” I say, as I’m the running point there. “I check in often with the lawyer handling everything.”
“Okay, then that’s it on the business front,” Lucas says, turning to me. “Which means we can move on to the personal shit. Who was the woman you ran after last night?” he asks, his eyebrows raised in curiosity.
I shake my head, not surprised that one of my partners caught me bolting after Taylor. “Remember the woman from Charleston I told you about?”
“She’s here? In Miami? Damn. You must have made an impression.” Lucas lets out a low whistle.
“She’s here on vacation.” And to tell me about the connection that will bind us for life. “Anyway, I said I’d be her tour guide while she’s in Miami. Any suggestions on where I can take her for our first excursion?” I don’t want to do touristy things, but I want her to enjoy my city while we get to know each other better.
Both men grow silent as they think.
Tristan places his thumb on his lower lip as he considers, then snaps his fingers. “I have a friend who rents out his yacht, captain, and personal chef for charters. Want me to call him and set up a day? You could go alone … or all six of us can make a day of it. I know Kaylee would love a day on the water.”
“Rainey, too,” Lucas adds. “Besides, I want to meet this woman who knocked you on your ass.”
I chuckle and nod. “I think she’d like other women to hang out with.”
I plan on spending plenty of alone time with her while she’s here, so a day on a yacht with my best friends and the woman I’m both interested in and who’s carrying my baby seems like fun.
