It’s been three years since Jenna Hatcher said goodbye to Troy Jagger Maddox. And during that time, she shed many tears over their breakup.
Now Troy’s back, just when she’s on the verge of engagement to Landon, the man who helped her get over him.
And he’s requested her employer, Scarborough Publishing, edit and publish the book he wrote, Growing Up Rocker – with one stipulation.
Jenna edits and does the rewrites.
Under pressure from her boss with the promise of advancement, she takes on the assignment and struggles to deny her long buried feelings for Troy.
When her relationship with Landon becomes rocky and they separate, she gives in to her passion for Troy on the weekend of Melanie’s wedding.
But there’s still the secret Troy is keeping from her and when she finds out, her heart breaks all over again.
As miscommunications and misunderstandings are worked out with both men, Jenna must make a choice, one which will break the heart of someone she loves.

To my first love – Eleanor James (1644 – 1719)

I want to see you live your dreams,

Achieve greatness and be happy,

And I want to be a part of your life when you do,

‘Cause I keep imagining spending my life with you,

Seeing amazing places with you,

Sharing moments where we are both breathless, lost for words.

I want to see you smiling, hear you laugh,

And I want to love you.

I want to be able to share memories with you, good and bad.

I want to be able to hold you when you’re upset

And tell you things are going to be okay,

Because I would try my best to make it okay,

To make it better for you.

And I know you would do the same for me.

I want to see you when I wake up, a smile would flood my face.

I want to talk to you deeply

About things we don’t have answers to.

I want to get to know you every single day,

Because I understand that people change.

You will change, but so will I.

I not only want to share my mind with you but my body too.

I want to kiss you like it’s the first time, every time.

And I want to feel my love for you flowing through my veins like blood,

Warming me up and making my heart beat faster

Every time I see your beautiful face.

You stole my heart years ago, and you can keep it,

Because forever I am yours.

Troy was trying to push his way back into my life, and he was succeeding. I managed to convince myself that I loved Landon—with most of my heart because, in truth, Troy still held a piece of it in his grasp even though he didn’t know it. Troy’s reappearance after our three-year separation, just when I was happy and satisfied with how everything was going, had me growing increasingly worried about whether I was truly ready for the life I had planned with Landon.

To top it off, he recently released his new album, Orion, which included the first new song called Essence of J. It wasn’t coincidental that he not only named a song after me but also did it only after we were back in contact for his book deal. The words I read were haunting, with Troy writing how numb he was from our breakup. Something I couldn’t stop thinking about since Smyth brought it to my attention.

But now, I would have to confront him about the song, and it made me nauseous. I was still having dreams about Troy, dirty dreams. Dreams that a woman on the verge of engagement to another man shouldn’t have been having.

“Jen, are you listening to me?”

I hadn’t been listening to my cubicle mate. Smyth was trying to calm me, but I couldn’t be soothed. I was too nervous about confronting Troy, who was due at Scarborough any minute. I hadn’t eaten breakfast or drank coffee, which was a daily morning ritual. Landon looked at me like I was nuts when I declined.

“I’m sorry,” I told Smyth. “I have a lot on my mind.”

“I know. Just tell Troy how you feel. Don’t hold back.”

I gave him a weak smile. “I will.”

I checked my watch. It was nearly ten. Troy would be waiting for me in the conference room. I picked up his manuscript, Growing up Rocker, and smoothed my skirt and blouse. As I had done previously for our meeting, I once again dressed conservatively, even buttoning my shirt to the neck. I ended up unbuttoning it as I waited in the subway with Landon this morning since the humidity was unbearable, and I could feel the sweat misting my skin as we waited. But once I got to my desk, the first thing I did was make sure I was covered again.

“You look fine. Go give it to him,” Smyth said.

I chewed my lip. “Do you have to say it like that?”
