“It was a really long time ago.”

“To be alone for so long—it breaks my heart.”

“I’m not alone right now,” he whispered, enjoying the feel of Ajax’s skin against his and the way his breath brushed over his chest.

“I’ve got to get up and blow out the candles, and I don’t want to move.” Ajax’s words were slowing, his body growing more pliant against Finn.

“I’ll get them.” Finn reluctantly slid away. Ajax watched him with sleep-heavy eyes.

“Come back and sleep here?”

Finn looked down at him, his heart feeling a mix of emotions that he simply didn’t want to deal with, so he nodded. The whole time he took care of the candles, he worked not to think about the future. Maybe he could do this. Just be with this wonderful man for another five months.

But even as he tried to convince himself, he knew that in the long run, it would kill him to leave Ajax.

Chapter Fourteen

Ajax

Ajax set his jaw and locked the studio door, shutting himself inside. It had been three days since he’d led Finn to his room, and they’d spent every night in each other’s arms. He couldn’t keep his hands off Finn during the day, either, which meant he’d made no progress on “Smoke Moves.” Today, he was determined to work on it, no matter the temptation. The lyrics kept changing, but he had the music down. Slow beat, and a build on the second chorus that gave him goosebumps when he played it. So he knew he’d created something memorable. And even if it wasn’t to anyone else, he was still proud of it.

Once it was done, he’d play it for Finn first. After all, the song was about him. Inspired by him.

After a few hours, he found his attention wandering back to breakfast and the way Finn had backed him into the counter and devoured his mouth. This kind of chemistry was something he’d dreamed of finding and never thought he’d have.

Finn was a dream with his hands, and holy fuck, his mouth. All their encounters so far had moved fast and hot, hands and mouths sending them both to ecstasy before they even had time to reach for the lube. Tonight though, Ajax wanted that powerful man to fuck him into the mattress. Pound his brains out. They’d made plans to watch a movie, and he looked forward to that, too, because spending time with Finn was just as good as the sex. The bodyguard had started out so serious and professional, but there was a really delightful sense of humor starting to shine through.

Problem was, there were also these moments where something bleak passed over his face, and Ajax couldn’t help but worry it had to do with him.

Finn didn’t seem to regret getting together with Ajax, not if the way he touched him was anything to go by. But that fleeting expression did something to Ajax every time he caught it.

He’d just have to make sure he gave Finn something else to think about.

Ajax stared at the computer screen in front of him, realizing he’d get no more work done today. Anticipation of an evening with Finn had him jumping to his feet. He’d run on the treadmill and lift some weights for a while, then take a thorough shower. He couldn’t wait to feel Finn inside him.

Later that night, they settled on the couch to watch the movie. Ajax leaned back, resting his head on Finn’s chest and setting the bowl of popcorn on his lap. “Which movie did you pick?”

“I didn’t because I don’t know which kind you like.”

He glanced back. “I like most genres, but I really like comedies and oh, well, don’t laugh, but you know those domestic thrillers usually put out directly by channels like Lifetime? Sometimes… I binge those. The worse they are the more I enjoy them. Doctors stalking. Unhinged sisters-in-law. Killer teenaged assassins. All fodder for song ideas—if I didn’t care about the songs so much.” He laughed. “You?”

“Documentaries, but I’ve been known to enjoy thrillers. Depends on my mood but occasionally, I binge cheesy horror flicks.” A faint flush crept up Finn’s cheeks, which Ajax found adorable.

“Ooh, let’s do a horror thriller tonight.” He picked up the remote and started scrolling through the channels. “Here’s an oldie but goodie. Misery. Seen it?”

“The one about the insane fan? You’d think that subject would give you nightmares.”

“It did. But it’s so good, I still loved it. Since we’ve both seen it, we can feel free to get distracted.” He winked and settled back against Finn’s chest.

Finn wrapped his arms around Ajax’s chest, his thighs on either side of Ajax’s hips. It felt so good cuddled against him like this, he wanted to stay like this forever.

They shared the popcorn and made comments here and there, but about forty minutes into the movie, Finn started stroking his stomach. It started kind of soothing, then Ajax felt Finn’s lips in his hair. He turned and their mouths met in a clinging kiss that had his bare toes curling on the couch cushions. He set the half-empty bowl of popcorn on the coffee table then came back to kiss Finn again. He opened his mouth, Finn’s tongue sliding possessively inside. He reached behind him to slide his fingers along the shaved sides of Finn’s hair as they continued to make out—movie forgotten.
