Harper notices too and laughs beneath her breath.

“You know,” she says, leaning into me, “I think he’s really happy. And look, I know you’re disappointed the league didn’t give the Vipers the All-Star game acceptance but there’s always next year.”

“There is indeed. They sounded very encouraged by all our progress and I know we’ll get it soon…thanks in large part to you and all your innovative thinking.”

She glances up at me, eyes soft with love. “I do what I can. I didn’t ever think I could be this happy. How about you?”

I don’t tell her that there’s one thing that could make me happier, and that’s if she and Dylan would move in with me. I’ll hit her up with it at some point soon, but not right now. So I smile and bend down to kiss her. “The happiest I’ve ever been.”

The final buzzer of the period sounds soon after.

Vipers four.

Badgers two.

The crowd rises to its feet in thunderous applause while green towels whip through the air across the arena. Standing there in the middle of it all—with Harper beside me and Dylan smiling nearby while the organization and city I love thrives around us—I feel something I haven’t felt in longer than I can remember.

Peace. I wasn’t sure I would ever recapture this. For years I believed grief would define the rest of my life.

Instead, love won out.

And as the crowd continues roaring beneath the bright lights of the arena, I realize with complete certainty that life is good.
