“You know what?” I pushed up from the table. “Fuck you.” Then I headed to the door, glancing back at Wolf. “I’m out, man.”

“Dude, you rode with me.”

“I can fucking walk.”

She pissed me off, and I wasn’t even sure why. She hadn’t done anything, but…God. Women! I made my way through the group of middle-aged bikers loitering in the parking lot, then heard Monroe calling my name. But I kept going. I was almost to the road when she latched onto my arm.

“Zepp!”

“What!” I spun around to face her. My heart pounded in my chest, a form of self-hatred for giving a shit about what she thought of me. “What, Monroe?”

Her hands landed on her hips, her boot tapped the ground, and finally, she blew out a sharp breath. “Sorry. You don’t owe me an explanation. We’re…” Her brow tightened. “Friends. I guess.”

No the hell she was not trying to pull that friend bullshit with me. Whatever this was between us, it sure as hell wasn’t friends. I snorted. “Sure, Monroe. Friends.”

Her gaze lingered on me like she wanted to say more, but then she turned back toward the Waffle Hut. “Jade’s ordering you a milkshake.”

So she had felt guilty before she even came out to chase me down... I started after her, catching up and walking close enough that our arms touched. “Do I look like a guy who drinks milkshakes, Monroe?”

“Who doesn’t drink milkshakes? You really are a psychopath.”

“And you really are hot.”

The dismissal bell for fifth period rang. Students crammed their books into their lockers, then filed out the back doors for the pep rally. Yeah, screw that. There were many things I’d rather do—gouge my own eyes out being one. The mass of students went left, and I hooked a right toward the parking lot.

I made it to the edge of the breezeway, then paused at the sound of Mr. Brown calling my name. When I spun around to face him, he frowned at me. The way his arms folded over his chest made his oversized suit jacket puff out at the shoulders. “Skipping school, are we?”

“I’m just getting something from my car,” I lied, plastering a fake smile to my lips.

“You aren’t allowed to go back to your car during school hours. You know the rules.” Jesus, this wasn’t Barrington. Any given lunchtime, you could find kids sitting in their cars smoking weed. He was just a dick. He thumbed behind him to the field. “May I suggest you don’t allow Zeppelin Hunt to taint your otherwise spotless record.”

Of course, this was Zepp’s fault. Because I couldn’t just not want to go to the stupid “team spirit” bullshit. I started down the sidewalk and spotted Zepp ahead of me, walking backward with a smug grin on his face. He waited for me, throwing an arm around my shoulders when I caught up to him. The scent of smoke and leather greeted me, familiar and somehow comforting now.

“Brown bust your ass?” He laughed like the smartass he was.

“I’d rather shit in my hand and clap than watch this bullshit.”

We followed the herd of students through the fence surrounding the football field, then into the bleachers. I followed Zepp up the rusted steps to where Hendrix and Bellamy sat with Jade. I eyed her, wondering if she had willingly chosen to sit with them or not.

I leaned forward to glare at Hendrix. “If your brother tries to screw Jade…” I whispered to Zepp, and he placed a finger to my forehead, pushing me back.

“He’s not fucking your friend. Calm your tits.”

“He’d stick his dick in a cinnamon roll if it got him off.”

Feedback crackled through the speakers, followed by upbeat dance music. The head cheerleader bounced onto the field, ponytail swinging, smile beaming before she stopped center field in front of the microphone. “Are you guys ready to beat Barrington this weekend?”

Every fiber of my being cringed. “Kill me now.”

Zepp plucked a joint from his pocket, placing it to his lips and lighting it. Right there in the middle of the pep rally.

Other cheerleaders ran onto the field, doing flips and shouting while the football players strutted out, led by Chase. Wolf meandered along at the back of the herd, looking lost because he was probably stoned.

Zepp’s gaze dropped to my legs, thick smoke crawling through his lips. “Those skirts would look killer on you.”

“Well, we all know you have a thing for cheerleaders, Zepp.” I wouldn’t be seen dead in a cheerleader’s uniform.

“Not cheerleaders, babe. I just have a thing for pussy.”

“Good to know.” I hated that I cared because it wasn’t like I didn’t know he was a whore.

A slow smirk worked over his lips. “Jealous, Roe?”

Our eyes locked. “You want me to be?”

The pungent aroma of marijuana wafted in front of my face. Zepp folded his arms, resting them on his knees before he leaned into me. “I wouldn’t hate it if you were.”
