I let out a relieved breath.

If Sunny trusted her, then I would try to trust her, too.

“And when will this investigation on Sheriff Graydon finish up?” I asked, feeling Wake all but frothing to ask the question at my side.

“As of today, the investigation is over. They’ve just issued the arrest warrant. In fact, you might get to catch the show if you head out there now.” Sunny stood up. “I alerted the proper authorities to his whereabouts when I heard him in here as I was coming to deliver the good news.”

“And today?” Wake asked. “Was he a part of that accident?”

“Yes.” Annalise grimaced. “I was there when he ordered it. Took a prisoner out of the lockup and gave him that Hummer himself. Said if he survived, he was free to go sans misdemeanor.”

“That piece of shit,” Wake growled.

“What are yo—eeep!” I cried when suddenly Wake had me up in his arms, and he was carrying me out of the hospital.

The nurse tossed me my paperwork as we passed and said, “Have a nice day!”

I caught the paperwork, and then we were all but marching through the hospital corridor and straight out the front door. Into a whirlwind.

Wake’s whole crew stood there, as well as about fifteen officers, ranging from FBI to local authorities, to other crews that didn’t have their names embroidered on their shirts. But they had that whole ‘I’m a cop’ look about them that told me what they were, despite their nondescript clothes.

But the highlight, the absolute most perfect thing about this all, was seeing Sheriff Graydon in handcuffs.

“So what does this mean for the county?” I asked Sunny. “Who’s the sheriff?”

“The one under him will take over until a special election can be done,” he answered. “Which, I assume, will be very soon seeing as the one under him is dumb as a box of rocks.”

I’d had no experience with anyone besides Graydon, so that would definitely be enlightening.

Looks like Accident might be in for some changes.

“You!” Sheriff Graydon growled. “What are you doing with them?”

I turned to see Annalise shrinking behind Sunny.

But Sheriff Graydon wasn’t having it. He marched forward, forgetting that he was in police custody, and was roughly yanked back by the bald-headed man beside him with a face like a junkyard dog.

“No,” the junkyard dog snapped. “Stay. Or you’ll go into the cruiser.”

Graydon didn’t stay.

And we all got the pleasure of watching him be carried away while a man beside the junkyard dog read him his Miranda Rights.

“…attempted murder of Dutch Westfield, conspiracy to commit murder, sex trafficking minors….” The list continued as the officer continued, telling him what he was being accused of.

Best. Day. Ever.

-Fact of life

WAKE

Six weeks later

I’d barely gotten any sleep the night before, so waking up outside on my favorite lounger, listening to the water lap against the dock I was currently lounging on wasn’t a surprise.

What was a surprise was to hear my wife talking instead of being at work like she said she was going to be.

Opening my eyes, I twisted in my lounger to find her, Lolo, Danyetta, and almost all of my crew on the picnic benches behind me. The smell of meat on the grill must’ve been what woke me, because I’d become quite accustomed to sleeping through Lolo and Dutch talking.

More and more, she was over at my house spending time with my wife and me. And more and more, so was that fuckin’ Dayden.

But it was worth it.

I loved spending time with my kid, and I loved even more that she enjoyed spending time with Dutch.

It was beginning to be commonplace to find my house full.

Soon, I would need to find a bigger one. Or add on to the one that I had.

“Look who’s up!”

Kobe.

He wasn’t sitting with the rest of them. He was on the edge of the dock fishing, a beer in one hand, and his rod in the other.

“You’re back,” I replied gruffly. “How surprising.”

Kobe had been another constant, as well as my usual group of friends that I’d made while in prison.

And though Kobe hadn’t really been that, I found more and more that I liked having him around. He was always very aware of everything that was going on, and never missed a single thing of what was going on around town.

“The new sheriff is in town,” Kobe said, ignoring my dig. “He’s somethin’.”

“What do you mean when you say ‘he’s somethin’?” I asked curiously.

“It’s Sunny,” he answered. “And he’s something.”

Sunny had surprised us all by retiring from the FBI and running for sheriff. He’d gotten the nomination, and today was his first official day.

“Now that the new soon-to-be dad is awake.” Kobe stood up. “Let’s go eat.”

“How did you know that?” I asked as I got up. “She only told me this morning.”
