I put a hand to my chest, right over my heart. It’s beating in triple time. “You were serious about that?”

He grabs on to my chin and hold me in place. “Yes, I was fuckin’ serious about that. Anything that has to do with you, I’m serious about.”

I take a deep breath. There are so many things we probably need to talk about, but none of that seems to matter right now. I stand up on my tiptoes and loop my arms around his neck. I push my body against his, fitting my curves against the hard muscles of his torso. “Take me home then.”

He pulls me up, kissing me until I’m breathless. When he releases me, he doesn’t let me go far. I’m tucked under his arm as we make our way down the stairs, and I swear I hear him whisper, “Good girl.”

Epilogue

Sara

I think I lost him. I’m not sure, and I definitely wouldn’t bet money on it or anything, but I’m pretty sure I lost him.

Daniel wasn’t joking when he said he was going to continue stalking me. He’s done it since the day he met me and every day since.

A part of me feels guilty right now because when he finds out I’m gone, he’s going to not only be mad, but he’s going to lose his shit. He says it unsettles him when he’s away from me. I can imagine when he starts to look for me in the office and Christy—poor Christy—tells him that I stepped out. I tried to explain to her that he was going to freak out, but she said she can handle it. I don’t think anyone has seen Daniel freak out before, and I honestly don’t know if she’s really ready for it.

I take a deep breath as I sit in the waiting room. I’ve already turned my phone to silent, and I refuse to look at it. I know if I see a missed call from him, I’m going to call him back. I’m weak when it comes to Daniel.

These last couple of months have been off the charts. That night after the bar, Daniel took me home with him. He took care of me, and when I tried to go home the next day, he went with me. He met my father and my mother and darn, I wasn’t ready for that. My parents weren’t either.

I had no idea what he had planned, but when he told my mom and dad we were getting married and I was moving in with him, I thought my father was going to lose his shit.

I tried to intervene, but Daniel just looked at me with a smile, kissed me on the forehead, and asked to speak to my father privately. Twenty minutes later, my dad was smiling and welcoming Daniel to the family—proving again that he always gets what he wants.

The door from the waiting room leading to the back opens, jarring me back to the present. “Mrs. Chambers?”

I look at the nurse calling my name, and guilt starts to churn in my belly. I stand up and pull my purse over my shoulder, doing my best to smile at the nurse. “That’s me.”

She returns my smile. “Follow me.”

I follow behind her and start to ramble as I do all the pre appointment diagnostics. When I’m finally left in a room, I take a few deep breaths. I sit down in the chair with my hands fidgeting in my lap.

The doctor comes in, and I smile nervously at him. “What’s up, Doc?”

He shakes his head and smirks at my joke. “Not much. How you doing today?”

I start to answer him, and then his phone dings in his pocket. He pulls it out and looks at it. He reads it then looks at me over the top of his glasses. “Tell me, is it okay for your husband to come back?”

I imagine that my eyes get as big as saucers. “Uh, I don’t...” I start, but I don’t get to finish that sentence. I hear a pounding on the door and then I hear Daniel’s voice through the thin wood. “Don’t you say it, Sara. So help me if you tell him you don’t have a husband I’m going to...”

I roll my eyes, and my face flushes. This is so embarrassing. I jerk open the door. “Geez, are you kidding me right now? Keep it down.”

He’s mad. Daniel is furious right now. He’s looking between the doctor and me, and it’s then I find out exactly how smart my doctor is. “Well, I’m going to give you two a few minutes. Just let a nurse know when you’re ready for your appointment.”

I open my mouth. “I’m ready.”

But Daniel shakes his head. “Great, Doc. We’ll let you know.”

The doctor looks between us and then walks out of the room, shutting the door behind him. Daniel towers over me with a fierce expression on his face. Anyone else would probably be nervous or scared right now, but not me.
