“Well, the doc’s not in, but I’m happy to offer my services.”

I laugh, but then both of our expressions turn serious.

“Office?” he asks.

“Fuck, yeah.”

And soon we’re scrambling from the shop into Doc’s office, pulling each other’s clothes off—scrambling out of them—before giving each other the relief we both need right now. When we clean up, we head out and meet the guys, both of us chill-as-fuck because of the tension we’ve already taken care of. Gary and Travis should have done the same thing before they went out because they wind up making out in the corner, clearly needing to get back to their place and let out their own aggression on each other’s asses.

We spend a few hours out with the guys before heading back to Metropolis. When we get into the condo, we’re gripping and tugging at each other’s clothes once again.

“I’m fucking ready to take that ass,” I say.

We stumble into the bedroom.

I pull off my shirt, and Cody pushes me back onto the bed. As I land, he undoes my belt and starts pulling my jeans and boxers down my legs.

As he reaches my shoes, he leans back. “Oh, shit. Better get rid of these annoying things, too,” he says.

“You’re so drunk right now,” I tell him.

He shrugs. “Drunk and in love.”

He looks up and gazes into my eyes, and I see just how much he meant those words. And I’m waiting for him to bust out into the Beyoncé song when he says, “I’m proud of you, Hayden.”

“Proud of me?”

“Yeah. That you applied for school at Georgia State for spring semester.”

“I wouldn’t have done it if you hadn’t kept encouraging me to.”

“But you could have just kept putting it off like most people do. And it meant a lot to me to see you go right for something you want.”

“You really have been great,” I say. “Encouraging, and it’s been amazing, everything that’s happened the past few months. Like people are willing to pay me to help them out with shit. It’s crazy.”

“Well, you’re a highly qualified candidate, and I think it’s great that you want to pursue it for real now.”

“And I’m going to return the favor by making you get the comic book you’re working on published.”

He rolls his eyes.

“I’m serious. You’re good, and you have a great concept.”

“I don’t know that Superass, Math Man, and Bottom Boy are a great concept, but—”

I laugh. “Those weren’t the ones I was talking about. I’m talking about your little pet project that you’ve been obsessed with for the past few months. You know it’s good.”

“Of course, I do. Now that I have my little muse.”

He removes my shoes, socks, jeans, and briefs and tosses them aside. Then he removes his own clothes before climbing on top of me.

“What are you going to do to inspire me tonight?” he asks.

I push his shoulder and roll on top of him.

He beams.

“I think it’d be better if I showed you,” I tell him.

“By all means.”

We kiss again. It’s a sloppy, frisky, playful kiss, smelling of tequila and whiskey.

I wrap my arms around him and pull him close to me.

I’m just so appreciative of how lucky I am to have met him. To have stumbled into his life when I did, seemingly just an accident. It’s almost like Cody was right. That everything works out, and that things happen for a reason. I never used to think like that, but in some ways, I’m starting to believe maybe he’s right.

Maybe everything really does happen for a reason.
